The Aqua satellite provided this satellite image showing a series of hotspots found in the Siberian region of Russia. These hotspots have been categorized as wildfires rather than agricultural fires by the website: http://fires.kosmosnimki.ru/ The popular Kosmosnimki.Ru web resource introduces the "hybrid" view option map layers over satellite-based image. MODIS fire hotspots have been layered over the satellite image and provide clickable areas to see exactly how many hotspots are being detected and what type they are. Because we are getting into the hot, dry time of year in this area it is likely that these are wildfires.
This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on May 10, 2013. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red.

WASHINGTON, May 9, 2013 ? First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, hosted 170 military mothers and children at the White House today for a formal Mother?s Day tea.
The event was part of the Joining Forces campaign, which provides support and opportunities for military families. It brought military moms, their mothers and kids from around the country to the White House, Obama said.The guest list also included Lilibet Hagel, wife of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel; Patty Shinseki, wife of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki;the first lady?smother, Marian Robinson; and the military spouses of the year from each of the services, the National Guard and the Coast Guard. In addition, Britain?s Prince Harry also made a surprise visit.
?Today we have some of the most extraordinary moms here with us -- active-duty troops and military spouses from all across the country,? Obama said.
?You help our country soar. When somebody needs you ? your family, community or your country -- ? you answer the call every time,? she said.
Following the first lady?s remarks, while mothers remained in the East Room drinking tea made from chamomile grown in the White House garden, the children went to the State Dining Room where they made cards and crafts for Mother?s Day.
The 50 children, ranging in age from 6 to 13 years, made their gifts with help from the first lady, Biden, Prince Harry, military personnel and White House staff, among others.
When the youths re-entered the East Room bearing their gifts, Prince Harry emerged with them, bringing the crowd to cheers and applause.
Following two deployments to Afghanistan, Prince Harry has since ?focused on honoring the sacrifices and service of veterans and military families,? especially as the war there is drawing down, Obama said.
?[Prince Harry] has spent a lot of time supporting wounded warriors and families of the fallen,? she said. The prince will also attend the 2013 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., where injured service members will compete in a variety of sports at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and Air Force Academy as part of his U.S. trip.
?When he heard about this tea and all of you, he wanted to be here to personally thank you for your service,? Obama said.
In support of service members, their families and veterans, Obama told the audience that the Joining Forces initiative is a ?forever proposition? that will continue with succeeding presidents. Obama and Biden established Joining Forces in June 2011 to mobilize backing from every sector of society to help these individuals find work and other resources.
?I hope you know how much your country appreciates you,? the first lady told the audience. ?People across America have your backs ? from everyone here at the White House and the Department of Defense ? to doctors, college professors, community and faith leaders. It?s because of you and what you?ve given this country.?

BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) ? The American Gerbil Society's annual pageant brought dozens of rodents scurrying to New England this weekend for a chance to win "top gerbil."
The Bedford competition called for agility demonstrations in which the gerbils must overcome obstacles and race to the end of a course. Breeders of the small animals vie for coveted ribbons based on body type and agility.
"A male gerbil should be a good, strong, hefty-looking gerbil," said Libby Hanna, president of the American Gerbil Society. "If you are going to think of it in human terms, you might think of a football player ? somebody who's big, thick neck, nice, strong-looking male gerbil."
An ideal female gerbil will have a more streamlined appearance that even humans covet, she said.
"So she would be strong and athletic-looking ? not really scrawny, but slim," said Hanna, who serves as a judge in the show. "I usually use a figure skater as my mental image or gymnasts ? so obviously a gymnast is not necessarily a big, big woman, but she's gonna be strong, muscular and athletic."
The Friday-Saturday show drew gerbil enthusiasts and breeders from around the country and culminates in the presentation of champion and breeder certificates.
Fourteen-year-old Sarah Kaden from Bordentown, N.J., thinks gerbils have great personalities.
"Even though they are so little, they are very different from each other and they smell a lot less than my brother's hamsters," she said Friday.
That sentiment is not surprising since the small, furry and inquisitive creatures look cute when they nibble on their food, stand on their hind feet or scurry around their environment.
Gerbils are perfect pets for modern families as they don't require to be taken out for a walk, could easily fit in a small apartment and their tanks only need to be cleaned about once a week.
Still, some people freak out when they visit friends and see gerbils in the home.
"I've had a couple of people come to my house that actually didn't know that I had gerbils. They were sort of freaked out, but I just told them that it was OK, they stay in their tanks, there was nothing to worry about," said Diane Nott who traveled from Elyria, Ohio, to compete in the show.
Gerbils thrive in desert habitats and their growing popularity as pets led authorities in California and Hawaii to make it illegal to keep them since the weather there would make it possible for escaping animals to flourish in wild colonies that would damage crops and native plants.
At the New England show, each animal undergoes a health check. Inspectors look at the whiskers, teeth and mouths and check to ensure the rodents have no runny noses, bugs, loss of fur on their tails or other signs of health problems.
Donna Anastasi of Waltham got hooked on gerbils after buying them for her daughters when they were younger.
"Anyone can buy a $12 gerbil and get into the sport of gerbil showing or gerbil agility," said Anastasi, who is also vice president of the American Gerbil Society. "It's very fun ... easy and affordable and something you can do with your kids."

?I never got the sense he was a diva or pampered or anything in my involvement with him,? West Virginia offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson told Brian Costello of the New York Post. ?I never had one problem with him other than he watched too much film.?
Before the draft, Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly skewered Smith.? After the draft, Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com published critical quotes from anonymous sources regarding Smith.
?He?s going to play for a long time,? Dawson said this week. ?I think the Jets are going to be more than happy that they have him.? He?s going to work his [butt] off. It?s almost a positive for the Jets organization because if everything would have went smooth and he had been picked in the top five he probably wouldn?t be as motivated as he is right now.
?In my talks with him after the draft, he?s so fired up right now to prove this [jerk] wrong that he?s going to work and do it.?
Compounding Smith?s problems is that his camp didn?t launch an aggressive counterattack in response to Nawrocki?s scathing scouting report.? And with Smith firing his agents only days after the draft, he had no one in place to attempt to change the narrative and alter the perception arising from the Yahoo! Sports and ESPN reports.
Perception in this context is key.? His reported plan to leave the draft (ESPN reported it, Smith has denied it) after the first night fueled the perception that he can?t handle adversity, for those who already believed that.? His decision to fire his agents in the wake of the draft fueled the perception that he?s inclined to externalize blame.
In fact, we?ve (I?ve) been criticized, primarily by those who tend to look for reasons to criticize us (me), for pointing out the connection between Smith?s reported plan to leave the draft and the reaction from those who already have a dim view of him.
It?s a reasonable at worst, dead-on 100-percent accurate at best interpretation of the impact of the behavior on the opinions of those who believe the negative things reported about Smith.? Those who think I?m biased against Smith, who played college football at West Virginia University, apparently aren?t aware of my Mountaineer connection.? (I grew up in West Virginia, went to law school in Morgantown, live 30 miles from the school, and attended every home football game that I can.)
What I wrote about Smith after the first round of the draft contained the same advice I would have given Smith if he were my client, friend, cousin, nephew, or son.
Good advice is what he and every young player (and every young person) needs.? Here?s hoping that Geno Smith gets it from everyone around him, and that he heeds it.

BERLIN (AP) ? A modern production of Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhauser" is causing a stir in Germany because of Nazi-themed scenes showing people dying in gas chambers and members of a family having their heads shaved before being executed.
A spokeswoman for the Dusseldorf opera house said Tuesday that members of the audience "booed and were shocked" by Saturday's opening performance.
Monika Doll said the company of Deutsche Oper am Rhein is debating whether to tone down the provocative parts, added to the original by producer Burkhard Kosminski.
"Members of the audience booed and banged the doors when they left the opera house in protest before the end of the show," the head of the city's Jewish community told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Michael Szentei-Heise called the adaptation at the city's Deutsche Oper am Rhein "tasteless and not legitimate."
The director, Christoph Meyer, said in a statement that the opera company never wanted to hurt the feelings of the viewers. "This is not about mocking the victims, but mourning them," Meyer said.
At the opening of the Duesseldorf performance, performers could be seen inside glass chambers, falling to the floor as white fog flowed ? an allusion to the mass killings of the Jews in the Nazis' death camps. After a half hour, the music stopped and a family stepped on stage. The parents and their children were having their hair shaved off and then they are shot dead ? another reference to treatment of Jewish captives during the Holocaust.
The original Tannhauser opera is set in the Middle Ages and was first performed in Dresden in 1845. It is based on a traditional ballad about the bard Tannhauser and features a singing contest at the Wartburg Castle in south-central Germany.
Szentei-Heise, the Jewish community leader, objected to the inclusion of scenes reminiscent of the Holocaust, which occurred nearly a century after the opera was first performed.
"This opera has nothing to do with the Holocaust," Szentei-Heise said. "However, I think the audience has made this very clear to the opera and the producer."
Wagner, an ardent anti-Semite, remains a controversial figure in Germany and elsewhere nearly 130 years after his death. Adolf Hitler was an admirer, and playing Wagner's music is still considered a taboo in Israel.
