Cards 'very close' to hiring Reid

If we believe the various reports and rumors, the Cardinals have all but decided to hire Andy Reid.? If we believe the Cardinals, they still have more homework to do before making a decision.

So what?s the truth?? In early January, that?s often as elusive as it is in late April, as the draft approaches.

In this case, there?s a chance that Reid?s agent, Bob LaMonte, is working overtime to create the impression that the Cardinals have gone overboard for Reid, in the hopes of conjuring a market where one may not exist ? especially not at the financial level to which Reid is accustomed.

Over the weekend, we reported that Reid wants to coach the Chargers.? The Chargers have yet to show interest.? Also, there has been a feeling in some league circles that, when the music eventually stops, Reid may not have a seat.

What better way, then, to smoke out the Chargers or anyone else than by creating the impression that the Cardinals are poised to pluck Reid from the unemployment line?

At this point, it?s unclear whether the Cardinals are simply being coy or whether Reid, via LaMonte, is taking liberties with reality.? Regardless, it doesn?t hurt Reid to have other teams thinking that the Cardinals are in hot pursuit.

Same-sex marriage ceremonies begin in Maryland

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Same-sex couples in Maryland were greeted with cheers and noisemakers held over from New Year's Eve parties, as gay marriage became legal in the first state south of the Mason-Dixon Line on New Year's Day.

James Scales, 68, was married to William Tasker, 60, on Tuesday shortly after midnight by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake inside City Hall.

"It's just so hard to believe it's happening," Scales said shortly before marrying his partner of 35 years.

Six other same-sex couples also were being married at City Hall. Ceremonies were taking place in other parts of the state as well.

The ceremonies follow a legislative fight that pitted Gov. Martin O'Malley against leaders of his Catholic faith. Voters in the state, founded by Catholics in the 17th century, sealed the change by approving a November ballot question.

"There is no human institution more sacred than that of the one that you are about to form," Rawlings-Blake said during the brief ceremony. "True marriage, true marriage, is the dearest of all earthly relationships."

Brigitte Ronnett, who also was married, said she hopes one day to see full federal recognition of same-sex marriage. Maryland, Maine and Washington state were the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote, in November, a development Ronnett said was significant.

"I think it's a great sign when you see that popular opinion is now in favor of this," said Ronnett, 51, who married Lisa Walther, 51, at City Hall.

Same-sex couples in Maryland have been able to get marriage licenses since Dec. 6, but they did not take effect until Tuesday.

In 2011, same-sex marriage legislation passed in the state Senate but stalled in the House of Delegates. O'Malley hadn't made the issue a key part of his 2011 legislative agenda, but indicated that summer that he was considering backing a measure similar to New York's law, which includes exemptions for religious organizations.

Shortly after, Archbishop Edwin O'Brien of Baltimore wrote to O'Malley that same-sex marriage went against the governor's faith.

"As advocates for the truths we are compelled to uphold, we speak with equal intensity and urgency in opposition to your promoting a goal that so deeply conflicts with your faith, not to mention the best interests of our society," wrote O'Brien, who served as archbishop of the nation's first diocese from October 2007 to August 2011.

The governor was not persuaded. He held a news conference in July 2011 to announce that he would make same-sex marriage a priority in the 2012 legislative session. He wrote back to the archbishop that "when shortcomings in our laws bring about a result that is unjust, I have a public obligation to try to change that injustice."

The measure, with exemptions for religious organizations that choose not to marry gay couples, passed the House of Delegates in February in a close vote. O'Malley signed it in March. Opponents then gathered enough signatures to put the bill to a statewide vote, and it passed with 52 percent in favor.

In total, nine states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage. The other states are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The personal essay is dead

It is true, for many the personal essay is dead. Yet in this heyday of fiction I confess I am a closet essay lover. Yes, I love essays, particularly the ones where there is such an intimate link with the author. You don?t hear writers talk much about them unless they?re having to write one for school or are immersed in an MFA program. Maybe, if you?re one of the few readers of creative nonfiction literary journals?I am, you might; but for the most part I don?t hear much nonfiction book chatter let alone praises for the lone essay.

Why even bother with an essay?

Phillip Lopate, in his introduction to The Art of the Personal Essay, says ?the personal essay ?should certainly be celebrated, because it is one of the more approachable and diverting types of literature we possess.? There?s a wonderful conversational element at work in the form, and, best of all, it?s often frank, sometimes even confessional, and always?at least it should be?honest.

The writer seems to be speaking directly into your ear, confiding everything from gossip to wisdom. Through sharing thoughts, memories, desires, complaints, and whimsies, the personal essayist sets up a relationship with the reader, a dialogue?friendship, if you will, based on identification, understanding, testiness, and companionship. ? So you can imagine my delight when I discovered the Essay Reading Challenge 2013 hosted by Carrie at Books and Movies. Yes indeedy, there is such an event and I am leaping into its midst.

The 2013 Essay Challenge

The challenge is simple enough. It runs the entire year of 2013. You chose a goal of 10, 20 or 30 essays?I commit to 10 but will no doubt do more?and write a challenge post (this is it). NC man accused of stealing meteorites

BREVARD, N.C. (AP) ? Authorities in southern North Carolina have made one arrest following the theft of 100 meteorites from a science education center and are searching for a second suspect.

The Asheville Citizen-Times (http://avlne.ws/VrunOi ) reports that 29-year-old Brian Koontz of Balsam Grove is charged with breaking and entering, larceny and injury to personal property. He's being held at the Transylvania County jail.

Video surveillance shows two thieves breaking into the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute near Rosman around 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

The thieves took meteorites that were on loan to the institute. They also took television monitors, overhead video projectors, a microscope and other scientific instruments.

Sheriff's detective Wade Abram says most of the stolen items were recovered from one of the suspect's homes. He declined to say which suspect.
