Wozniak On iPhone 5 - Business Insider

It's become very clear that Steve Wozniak has no qualms about criticizing the company he helped found with Steve Jobs.

His latest jab comes from an interview with TechCentral, a technology site based in South Africa. When asked about the iPhone 5, Wozniak called Apple arrogant for not including a larger display on the device.

Here's the key snippet from the interview:

Part of me wishes Apple had not been so arrogant and feeling like "We're the only one with the right clue." I wish they had made a wider version [of the iPhone 5]...

...I think Apple tricked itself by saying "Oh, you can reach everything with one thumb." I don't see anybody having trouble using the larger screen. But Apple said that as a defensive move because everyone else had larger screens...

...Not all people want the same thing. A lot of people really like big screens.

Wozniak's criticism is on point with what many Android fans have been saying since the beginning. Android devices offer more hardware choices: bigger screens, expandable storage, removable battery, etc. But Apple's iPhone offers just one choice.

Keep in mind that Wozniak isn't your typical consumer. Even in the early days of Apple, he advocated a more open and customizable user experience. He's a geek and likes to noodle around with his gadgets. It shouldn't come as a surprise that he wants more choice with Apple's iPhones.

3 Helpful Spirituality Blogs and a Student's Thoughts on Each Post

My student, Jenn, shares a couple of her favorite spirituality posts from this website and how she?s learned to apply them in her life. I hope you enjoy her thoughts and check out the posts. The picture is also from her. I really found this blog to be insightful. The topic of expansion and contraction fascinates me on a really spiritual and intellectual level. I can relate it to physics as much as to my internal spiritual space.

In January 2009, my life stopped ?working.? I fell to my knees in exhaustion (the contraction kicked in.) My life had become all smashed up. First, my skin broke out into the worst case of acne I've ever experienced to the point where I didn't want to leave the house, and my friends were getting upset I wouldn?t want to see them. My 5-year relationship ended, and my dream job in NYC turned into a miserable environment that I dreaded waking up to go to. I couldn?t escape the misery; it was only building.

Like Jim mentions ?low energy,? I was really stuck in that space where I was met with despair, confusion and sooo much self-hatred. I can remember it like it was yesterday. The pain was so great that within hours I decided I needed to leave everything. So I did. I threw everything I could fit into my car and booked it to Pittsburgh to seek refuge.

Quickly I started to feel an expansion. Dream jobs were being put in front of me without much effort. I moved to four different homes in 3 years. I was in 2 healthy and committed relationships. My desire to smoke cigarettes, drink, and eat poorly left, and I found myself plugged into 5 different spiritual and environment groups.

And as of these past two weeks my relationship with the Divine Spirit and others is greatly expanding. I can feel my cells are in harmony, it?s nothing like I have experienced before.? I am finding I have so more space for my own self-love and love for others.???

Grief and loss are such uncomfortable topics for me to express. The pain is so intense that I find my throat blocked and I want to run. Reading Jim's blog have helped me to observe how strongly my ego holds onto relationships, my youth, the good days, the days when my parents were still together, when my grandma was living, etc.

Geeze, I'm only 27.

Like Jim writes, "The spiritual path is a path of loss." I find that there is a correlation; the more I let go and surrender my need to control life, the more at peace I am.

Recently, I have been trying to relinquish my old ego and make space for a cleaner and more enlightened ego. I find myself crying a lot recently over really simple things. Yesterday I started crying because the autumn leaves were starting to fall. A week ago I was reading a beautiful reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians in church for my brother?s wedding, and I started crying in front of the whole service. I feel really open, like emotions and feelings are passing quickly and intensely through me.

It's funny when I read this blog awhile ago, I really appreciated it, but the words seemed far away from me. Now when I read it I actually ?get it,? and it feels close, like an internal understanding. I'm noticing such a difference in my understanding and connection to life. A perfect example is that I've always loved nature, but truthfully I always felt separate from it like it was more pure or beautiful than I was and I wanted to be more like it. Today when I go hiking, I truly feel that there is no separation. For all those years I thought I was seeking nature, but what I was really seeking was myself.

The words "Just let go" bring up so much anxiety! I can feel it swell up in my root chakra. I never felt very safe or protected growing up, and I have purposely tried attaching to people, places, and things to develop a false sense of security. The idea of letting go and not knowing what the outcome will be triggers a very deep fear of feeling unsafe. I also start to feel fear, the need to control even more, and strong rage, which is followed by confusion.

For so many years I have been practicing how to control, manipulate, and shape my life to avoid the fear of the unknown. I was really trying to avoid myself and uncomfortable feelings. But now I see what Jim is saying; we really have no control over our lives. And that trying to control it and others is harmful and leads to much unnecessary pain. He mentions, "You wake up in the singular moment when you let go of all resistance." This has brought clarity to a lot of my own sleeping internal dragons.

In my morning meditation and throughout the day I practice surrendering and letting go. I am trusting that Divine Love is, always has been, and always will be taking care of me and that it is safe to take my hands off the steering wheel.

Unforgeable quantum credit cards in sight

ScienceDaily (Oct. 4, 2012) ? A team of physicists at Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics, Harvard University, and California Institute of Technology develops a scheme for noise tolerant and yet safely encrypted quantum tokens.

Whoever has paid a hotel bill by credit card knows about the pending danger: given away the numbers of the card, the bank account and so on, an adversary might be able to forge a duplicate, take all the money from the account and ruin the person. On the other hand, as first acknowledged by Stephen Wiesner in 1983, nature provides ways to prevent forging: it is, for example, impossible to clone quantum information which is stored on a qubit. So why not use these features for the safe verification of quantum money? While the digits printed on a credit card are quite robust to the usual wear and tear of normal use in a wallet, its quantum information counterparts are generally quite challenged by noise, decoherence and operational imperfections. Therefore it is necessary to lower the requirements on the authentication process. A team of physicists at Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics (Garching), Harvard University (Cambridge, USA), and California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, USA) has demonstrated that such protocols can be made tolerant to noise while ensuring rigorous security at the same time.

On the one hand, the properties of quantum information make it ideal for preventing any kind of forgery. On the other hand, everyday life conditions make it virtually impossible to perfectly store quantum bits of information due to the fragility of their physical carriers which could be individual nuclei. Researchers under the direction of Prof. Ignacio Cirac, director at MPQ and head of the Theory Division, and Prof. Mikhail Lukin (Harvard University) have focused on both improving storage quality and providing protocols which accommodate for such real-world imperfections. In order to do so, the verification process for such protocols must condone a certain amount of quantum bit failures. Relaxing the requirements for verification enhances the ability for a dishonest user to forge a quantum token. This interplay is addressed by the scientists by setting a tolerance threshold which admits a certain amount of noise while guaranteeing high security against fraudulent copies. As Dr. Fernando Pastawski (MPQ), who has worked on this topic in his doctoral thesis, was able to demonstrate, such thresholds are found for two kinds of "quantum token" protocols. In the first protocol, quantum information must be physically transferred back to the verifier who can then asses its validity directly. In contrast, the second protocol involves indirect verification by having the verifier communicate with the holder who locally measures constituent qubit memories.

In both approaches, the bank issues a token and sends it to the holder. The "identity" of the token can be encoded on photons transmitted via an optical fibre or on nuclear spins in a solid memory transferred to the holder. However, only the bank stores a full classical description of these quantum states.

In the approach denoted by "quantum ticket," the holder has to return the token to the bank or another trusted verifier for validation. The verifier is willing to tolerate a certain fraction of errors which should be enough to accommodate the imperfections associated with encoding, storage and decoding of individual quantum bits. The only information returned to the holder is whether the ticket has been accepted or rejected. Thus it is "consumed" and no longer available to the holder. The scientists show that through such an approach, both the likelihood of rejecting the token from an honest user and that of accepting a counterfeit can be made negligible.

The second approach is the "classical verification quantum ticket." In some cases it may be impossible that the quantum tickets are given back to the bank physically. Here the holder has to validate his quantum token remotely -- by answering challenge questions. The group considers a scheme where the quantum information is organized in blocks of qubit pairs. A non-revealing challenge question consists of requesting the holder to use a specific measurement basis for each block. By doing so, the holder is capable of providing a correct answer, but the token is consumed. This excludes the possibility for a dishonest user to cheat by answering complementary questions. As before, the given tolerance threshold determines the number of correct answers that is necessary for the verification of the token. The block structure used for the tokens allows exponentially suppressing the undesired capability of a dishonest holder to answer two complementary questions while assuring a true holder's token will be authenticated with a very high probability.

For both protocols a realistic noise tolerance can be achieved. "We can deduce from theory that on average no more than 83% of the secret digits may be duplicated correctly by a counterfeiter. Under realistic conditions, we can assume that an honest participant should be able to recover 95% of the digits. If now the verifier sets the tolerance level to 90%, it will be almost impossible to accept fraudulent tokens or to reject an authentic holder," Dr. Pastawski explains.

The protocols could in principle be demonstrated by using single qubits, e.g. single photons which carry the information in their polarization state, or single nuclei where the quantum information is encoded in their spin state. "However, in order to reach the time scales necessary for relevant applications, good qubit memories are needed. We have recently achieved storage times of one second for single qubits at room temperature, which is a big step, but not yet sufficient," Fernando Pastawski concedes. The quantum token presented here could serve as a primitive to construct quantum money -- that can change hands several times -- or even quantum credit cards that are unforgeable and hence immune to fraudulent charges. "I expect to live to see such applications become commercially available. However quantum memory technology still needs to mature for such protocols to become viable," the scientist adds.

AT&T has set up shop high above New York’s Lower East Side tonight with its upcoming holiday lineup, including the just-announced Galaxy Express from Samsung. It’s an entry-level device that still manages to pack a punch, and AT&T says that the Express is an ideal choice for first-time smartphone owners. If the carrier keeps the price point low, it might just be onto a winner.

The Express packs a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, larger than what we’re used to seeing on “budget” devices, with a modest 480 x 800 resolution. Its quality is noticeably lower than the rest of Samsung’s portfolio, yet it manages to impress, with the same bold "pop" and high-contrast colors we've come to expect from AMOLED. Sacrifices must be made, and this one isn't as drastic as we feared.

Underneath the hood you’ve got a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor (AT&T hasn’t given specifics, but we’ll venture to guess we’re dealing with a Snapdragon S4 here), 1GB of RAM, and Touchwiz-skinned Ice Cream Sandwich. The Express’s performance is impressive, and not just in terms of budget devices -- everything here is snappy, smooth, and confident, a testament to the processor and a byproduct of the lower-res screen. The 2,000 mAh battery should be able to handle a solid day of usage, based on what we’ve seen from similarly-equipped Galaxy devices.

The Express feels great in the hand and lacks a certain bulk and girth that often accompany lower-end devices. It’s light and trim and retains the refinement and eye-catching style present on the GS3. In fact, calling it a mini-GS3 wouldn’t be too far off. If you simply can’t stomach forking over $200 for a shiny flagship device, the Express could be a viable alternative. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for pricing and release dates—for now, check out some hands-on after the break.

Mitt Romney Campaign Concerned Military Voters May Not Have ...

On Monday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign sent Wisconsin officials a letter expressing concern that the state is not doing enough to make sure that military members serving overseas will have their votes counted.

"I am writing to express my concern regarding your office's attention to the voting rights of men and women in uniform, and to urge you to take immediate action to correct recent violations of military voting rights," wrote former Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi, who is the national chair of the Veterans and Military Families for Romney Coalition. The letter was sent to David Deininger, chair of the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board (GAB).

At issue is a federal law -- the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voter Act (UOCAVA) -- that requires election officials to send absentee ballots to military voters at least 45 days before a federal election.

"In this election cycle, your office was required to ensure the transmission of absentee ballots to military voters no later than September 22, 2012. According to your office's records, however, at least 30 Wisconsin municipalities under your supervision failed to transmit ballots to UOCAVA voters by the 45-day deadline," Principi wrote in the letter, which was obtained by WisPolitics.com.

Sending ballots to overseas citizens and giving them time to vote and mail back their ballots takes time, hence the 45-day period. The Romney campaign is worried that without that full window, military members may not have their votes counted in time.

"It takes a long time to get the ballots overseas," Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams told The Huffington Post. "Many times, members of our armed forces are on a mission that would require them to be away from their mail facility for several days. Sometimes they move around from different bases or different facilities. Of course, the ballot would have to catch up with them. So that 45-day window is critical."

In his letter, Principi requested that the Wisconsin GAB immediately make sure servicemembers receive their ballots and extend the deadline by which election officials must receive the completed ballots.

Williams said the campaign has not yet received a response to the letter.

GAB spokesman Reid Magney disputed that the problem was as serious as Principi's letter made it seem. He told HuffPost that, of the 4,288 military and overseas Wisconsin voters who requested absentee ballots, only 44 were not sent their ballots on time.

"Of the 44 sent late, all but six ballots were sent out in time for there to be 45 days of transit time (from the day sent to the last day for return the Friday after the election)," he added. "Of the six, five were emailed to the voters, so they received them immediately. The sixth voter is in basic training in Georgia, and his ballot was sent to him by mail on October 1. He did not have an email address. He also received information about how to use the new MyVote.WI.gov site to receive an absentee ballot immediately online."

Regarding the Romney campaign's request to extend the deadline, Magney said that would need to be done through a court order.

When asked for comment on the situation in Wisconsin, an Obama campaign spokesman said, "We absolutely support extensions that will allow our men and women serving this country to exercise the freedoms they protect and ensure their vote counts. We believe that everyone eligible to vote should be able to vote.?

The need to ensure that military members serving overseas get their ballots is one of the few issues that Democrats and Republicans seem to agree on these days.

But what concerns some progressives is that the Romney campaign doesn't seem to be working as hard to ensure that veterans -- in addition to students, minorities, and low-income individuals who would be disproportionately affected by GOP-backed voter ID bills and, unlike active-duty military members, tend to vote Democratic -- will be protected.

In August, Iraq war veteran Jon Soltz, who is the chairman of the progressive group VoteVets.org, criticized the Romney campaign for supporting an Ohio law that would do away with three days of early voting for residents, including veterans. According to Soltz, as many as 913,000 Ohio veterans would have seen their voting rights restricted.

"Once you leave the military, you are no longer covered by UOCAVA. Your voting rights are the same as any civilian," Soltz wrote on ThinkProgress. "That means the early voting law which Mitt Romney wants to undo, provided hundreds of thousands of Ohio veterans with more of an opportunity to vote."

Wisconsin isn't the only state that the Romney campaign is scrutinizing for the handling of absentee ballots. Williams said the campaign filed requests with all states for information on whether absentee ballots were sent to overseas voters on time.

So far, the requests have raised concerns in Vermont, Mississippi, Michigan and Colorado.

"We're doing this across the country in red states, in blue states, in battleground states, to ensure that every one of our fighting men and women have the right to vote and have their vote counted," Williams said.

Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos accused the Romney campaign of political posturing on the issue, telling Vermont Public Radio that, of the 834 ballot requests from active-duty military members in Vermont, 788 were sent out and the state was working to get ballots to the remaining troops.
