Discover Scrapbooking at Maggie's Place - Milford, CT Patch

?

Maggie Farina's card for her 550 New Avenue Ave. business, ?Maggie's Place,?reads: 'Come and join the world of scrapbooking.' After speaking with Maggie and her customers, it becomes clear that for them, scrapbooking truly is a universe unto itself.

"Most people think they're not creative," Maggie Farina said,?"until they come to scrapbooking." ?

What Is Scrapbooking?

Scrapbooking is anything that you want it to be. You start out with a piece of paper and add photos, other objects, and journaling is a big part of it, too.?

"You have to journal," Maggie said. "It has to be in your own handwriting."

Journaling gives each page a personal touch, which is the point for many.

Maggie added, "It's telling a story about your life."?

A Real Community

"We're there to help each other," Maggie noted of those who attend her classes and scrapbooking sessions.

Classes at Maggie's Place (which is open about every other weekend. Check out her website for a full schedule) include Card Marking, Stamping, Scrapbooking, Papercrafting Techniques, K&Co's SMASH Books and Zentangles.?

A day at Maggie's is affordable, too. "I charge $20 for the whole thing," Maggie said, referring to the regular 10 a.m. - midnight crop sessions.

Speaking with a few of Maggie's loyal customers, it becomes clear that they're a tight-knit clan. "It's a wonderful group of ladies," said Maggie's Place regular Kirsten Wagner.?

Anita Taylor, another enthusiast, noted that she began scrapbooking, "because my mother passed away." Anita created a heritage album and explored the genealogy of her family through scrapbooks.?

Of Maggie's Place specifically, Anita had this to say: "I'll be there forever."

Poll shows most Americans favor Medicaid expansion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Most Americans back the idea of extending health coverage to their low-income neighbors through the government's Medicaid program, unless it means higher costs for their own state, according to a new poll.

In a survey released on Tuesday by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, 67 percent of respondents gave a favorable view of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform provision to "expand the existing Medicaid program to cover more low?income, uninsured adults."

Support for the idea, which would expand coverage to as many as 16 million uninsured Americans, broke sharply along partisan lines. Nearly nine out of 10 survey participants who said they were Democrats and two?thirds of independents backed the expansion. Six out of 10 Republican participants said they opposed it.

Support dropped to 49 percent when poll participants were asked whether they would like to see Medicaid expanded in their home states, and a slight majority of 52 percent preferred maintaining the status quo when pollsters suggested an expansion could cost their states more money.

The results of the poll of 1,227 adults, conducted in July, have a 3 percentage point margin of error.

Medicaid, which is jointly funded by the federal and state governments and overseen by Washington, currently covers only narrowly defined groups of poor people in most U.S. states, including parents and pregnant women.

Obama's healthcare law, which was upheld as constitutional last month by the U.S. Supreme Court, would expand Medicaid to cover people with incomes of up to 133 percent of the poverty line. Between 90 percent and 100 percent of the cost of expanded coverage would be borne by the federal government.

The high court ruling gave states the ability to opt out of the Medicaid expansion. Several Republican governors have since vowed to do just that while deriding the plan as a costly expansion of federal bureaucracy.

The governors insist that the expansion will mean higher costs for states and lead to higher taxes or reduced funding for other programs such as education.

Proponents of reform say the Medicaid expansion would ultimately save money for states, while also saving lives by providing access to healthcare for those who need it.

Automotive Industry ETFs in Focus - Zacks.com

Unlike consumer staples, the consumer discretionary industry is highly sensitive to economic cycles (The Comprehensive Guide to Consumer Staples ETFs). At the time of recession when consumers lose confidence in the economy, only necessities are taken into account and savings tend to increase. Consequently, spending on consumer discretionary is the first to drop.

Consumer discretionary involves expending the discretionary income or disposable income on items that are not strictly necessary. Examples include buying new cars, eating out at restaurants and vacations.

At the time of recession, the stock prices of companies supplying discretionary goods and services thereby tend to be low or undervalued. Investors should take advantage of the situation while buying undervalued discretionary stocks during times of recession and selling them during a bullish phase or when the economy recovers (Play A Consumer Recovery With These Discretionary ETFs).

We will highlight one segment of consumer discretionary industry that looks to be both particularly sensitive to economic events and beaten down over the past one year period; the automotive sector (Which Auto ETF Should You Take For A Ride?).

In January-June 2012, General Motors Company (GM) led with a 18.1% market share in the U.S., followed by Ford Motor Co. (F) with a 15.7% market share, Toyota Motors Corp. (TM) came in with 14.4% market share, Chrysler-Fiat with a 11.5% market share, and Honda Motor Co. (HMC) and Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY) took up the last two spots among the top 10, with 9.6% and 7.9% market shares, respectively.

Auto Industry Outlook

Due to a massive structural change after the global economic meltdown of 2008, the global auto industry is expected to be ruled by automakers and suppliers based in the six major auto markets: China, India, Japan, Korea, Western Europe and the U.S. (If China Slumps, Avoid These Three Country ETFs)

The Big Three Detroit automakers (GM, Ford and Chrysler), who command a big chunk of the U.S. auto market, bounced back with help from strong demand in foreign locations. They restructured their product portfolios and responded to strong pent-up desire for more and newer automobiles both at home and abroad.

However, despite some of these recent positives, a few are worried that the relatively cyclical sector could face some significant trouble in the months ahead. This could be especially true if foreign markets remain under pressure or if America slumps back into a double dip.

In either of these cases, investors could see some serious volatility in the auto market, suggesting that a basket approach could be the way to play the sector with lower levels of risk. Below, we highlight two automotive ETFs which offer up broad exposure to a number of companies in the space and could be interesting choices, either long or short, for investors who are once again focused in on the car market:

First Trust NASDAQ Global Auto Index Fund (CARZ)

CARZ tracks the NASDAQ Global Auto Index which looks to evaluate firms in the automotive industry based on a variety of data inputs. The index looks to do this by including companies with the following three features- companies have to be listed on a global exchange, have a market cap of at least half a billion, and trade more than $1 million in volume for a three month period.

This approach produced this fund that has total holdings of 35 stocks, assets under management of $4.6 million and trades in volumes of 1,382 per day (Guide to the 25 Most Liquid ETFs).

Currently, the fund has most exposure in large cap securities with a very small proportion invested in mid cap and small cap securities. From an individual security perspective, the fund is pretty concentrated with top 10 holdings making up 60% of the total assets.

Top holdings include Honda, Toyota and Daimler AG. ?The fund charges an expense ratio of 70 basis points and it should be noted that the fund has performed terribly in the past one year period, delivering a negative return of 28.3%.

Given the promising trends for cyclical stocks at this time, some investors may want to consider buying into this automotive ETF in the short term. If the economy continues to rebound, we could see further gains in the media automotive space making this a potentially good time to get into this surging sector.

Currently, CARZ has a Zacks ETF Rank of 4 or ?Sell?

Global X Auto ETF (VROM)

Another fund which investors can consider for exposure to the automotive industry is VROM which tracks S-Network Global Automotive Index. This benchmark is a modified cap weighted index of publicly traded companies engaged in the production of automobiles, automobile parts, tires, and related activities.

It includes the fifty largest and most actively traded companies worldwide that are principally engaged (derive greater than 50% of revenues from sources listed above) in the automobile industry.

VROM provides exposure to a somewhat larger basket of automotive companies than its First Trust counterpart. The fund holds a total of 53 automotive companies with assets under management of $2.3 million and a volume of 1,300.

Like its competitor, the fund also appears to be concentrated in the top 10 holdings with 55% of assets invested in these securities. From individual company perspective Toyota, Daimler AG and Ford take the top three positions.

The fund charges 5 basis points less in expenses than CARZ and over the past one year period it has delivered a negative return of 27.1% (Three Cyclical ETFs That Are Surging Higher).?

The 4 Do's And Don'ts Of Home Improvement | GreenWerks

The 4 Do?s And Don?ts Of Home Improvement

So many home owners have the best intentions at heart and the biggest dreams when they undertake their home improvement project but somehow along the way they discover that what they thought would fulfil their dreams is slowly turning into a nightmare.

This is because they go into the project completely na?ve, thinking that everything will somehow work itself out. To avoid major heartbreaks, there are some do?s and don?ts that you ought to keep in mind in before you start and during your home improvement project.

1. Do plan

As with any other project, a proper plan needs to be in place before you begin your home improvements. Have in mind the exact specifics of what you want done in your house, and be sure that the project will actually be beneficial to you.

You should be aware that the notion that every home improvement automatically translates into an increase in home value is misguided. Plan your projects carefully to make sure that they are not just a waste of your money.

Planning also involves the creation of a budget. You do not want your money to run out when your contractor has just torn apart your bathroom and you have to live in the house in that condition until you can gather enough money to have the project completed!

Determine all the expenses that will be incurred, from the cost of hiring labour to that of buying materials, and see for yourself whether you have enough to sustain the project to completion. This is also the time to research on cost-saving tips.

2. Do not try to overhaul everything at once

Some homeowners are so excited to be finally remodeling their homes into what they have always dreamed of that they start tearing down walls and generally creating a proper mess of things. Not only are such antics foolish, they are also dangerous.

Before you tear anything down, consult with your contractor, you do not want to destabilize the structure of your house in the process. Also, blindly trying to overhaul everything can lead to you spending more than you should have. With some careful consideration you are sure to find pieces of furniture worth saving, you do not need to throw everything out.

3. Do only what you are capable of

In this do-it-yourself generation and all the resources available on home improvements, some foolhardy home owners try to do things which they really do not have the capacity to handle. While it is true that you can save quite some money on labour by taking on some projects for yourself, some are best to be left to the professionals.

Things like wiring and plumbing should be left to people who have actually received training in those fields. Unless you are an expert, do not attempt projects that involve these aspects on your own. You might wind up having to pay a lot more on damage control than you would have to just have a professional do it for you.

4. Do hire a good contractor

The type of contractor you get will determine whether you have a successful project or a disaster waiting to happen. So many home owners have had to go through unnecessary loss, just because they hired a contractor who was not properly qualified and did a shoddy job, or one who was a crook and used poor materials to complete the project so that they would make an extra profit.

Because there are no specific guidelines per se governing the trade, it might be a daunting task knowing how to tell a good contractor from a bad one. One of the easiest ways to pick a good one is to get a personal recommendation from someone who has also had some repairs done in their house.? As they have experienced first-hand the contractor?s services they will be better placed to advise you on them.

A good contractor however can only do so much with unclear instructions. Work done perfectly and with the best materials which is the exact opposite of what you wanted will do no one any good. Make sure you are on the same page with your good contractor and you are sure to get that house that you always dreamed of.

Nepal jeep plunge kills 14 pilgrims: police

At least 14 pilgrims were killed when a jeep carrying them to a sacred Hindu site in southern Nepal swerved off a highway and fell 100 metres (330 feet) into a stream below, police said on Saturday.

The jeep was taking the devotees to Ridi, a pilgrimage town in Palpa district, 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of Kathmandu, late Friday when the driver lost control, Nepal Police spokesman Rajendra Singh Bhandari told AFP.

"Locals came to know about the accident in the morning and informed the police. The death toll is likely to rise as the police rescue team is searching for bodies," he said.

Ridi, which lies at the confluence of the Ridi Khola and Kali Gandaki rivers, is visited by thousands of Hindus who bathe, worship at temples and cremate their dead.

District police inspector Purshotam Pandey said the pilgrims, from nearby Gulmi district, were carrying the remains of a relative to place them in the waters when their jeep crashed at the village of Deurali.

"The hilly road is little bit difficult and has lots of turns at the place where the accident occurred. We suspect that the jeep suffered brake failure," he said.

July marks the beginning of the monsoon season in Nepal, when rivers which have become parched in the first half of the year begin to swell up again, posing a greater threat to vehicles which lose control.

Accidents are relatively common on the impoverished Himalayan country's highways because of poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

Two weeks ago 38 Indian pilgrims were killed when their overcrowded bus lost control and plunged into a river as they were travelling to a temple in neighbouring Nawalparasi district.

Brewers?blank hot Nats to end 7-game skid

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:29 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Now that the Milwaukee Brewers have traded ace Zack Greinke, they'll be looking for other pitchers to emerge in his place.

Mike Fiers has been doing his part.

Corey Hart and Aramis Ramirez homered to back another fine pitching performance by Fiers as Milwaukee snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 6-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

Hours after sending Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels for rookie shortstop Jean Segura and two minor league pitchers, the Brewers ended Washington's six-game winning streak.

Fiers said he doesn't feel any extra pressure to perform with Greinke gone.

"My job is the same and that is to go out and put up zeros and keep my team in the game," Fiers said. "I'm feeling great out there right now."

Called up May 29 from Triple-A Nashville, Fiers (4-4) has been one of Milwaukee's most consistent pitchers in recent weeks. He did not give up a hit until the fourth inning and retired 14 of his first 17 batters.

"I think with the deception and the way he can change speeds, I think this is a guy that is going to be able to pitch in the major leagues for a while," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "At the beginning, I wasn't sure. But he keeps going. And it's not just one team, it's every team he pitches against."

Fiers allowed only four hits while striking out nine in 6 1-3 innings. Over his last seven starts, he has permitted four earned runs in 47 innings for a 0.77 ERA. It was his eighth consecutive start of at least six innings.

"Right now, everything is going well for me," Fiers said. "I think all my pitches were working well for me tonight."

His biggest test Friday came in the sixth. With one out, Steve Lombardozzi singled and Bryce Harper walked. But Fiers struck out Ryan Zimmerman and got Adam LaRoche, who had homered in each of his last three games, to fly out.

"He's very sneaky with his pitches," Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. "He's a lot of fun to catch."

Lucroy said the Brewers weren't surprised that Greinke was traded, but it's time to move on and try to win as many games as possible. The players were told of the trade by Roenicke before the game.

"That is the business side of baseball," Lucroy said. "We knew it was going to happen and we got three good players in return."

Fiers was replaced in the seventh and Michael Morse on first. Livan Hernandez gave the struggling Brewers bullpen a boost, getting Sandy Leon to hit into a double play.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson was impressed with Fiers.

"He comes right over the top and we don't make contact with it," Johnson said. "We could tell by the way we were hitting, if he kept throwing it over, we were going to have a hard time scoring."

Ross Detwiler (5-4) lasted 4 2-3 innings for the Nationals, giving up four runs and seven hits.

The Brewers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth. With two outs, Ramirez doubled as Harper tried to make a diving catch in right field. Hart followed with his 18th home run.

Carlos Gomez's RBI single in the fifth chased Detwiler. Gomez stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Leon and scored on Ryan Braun's single off Craig Stammen. Ramirez then cracked his 12th home run to make it 6-0.

NOTES: The Brewers also got back Double-A pitchers John Hellweg and Ariel Pena for Greinke. ... The Nationals released OF Rick Ankiel, who hit .228 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 68 games. Washington designated him for assignment on July 19. ... Brewers RHP Shaun Marcum, on the disabled list since June 15 with right elbow tightness, had a setback in a bullpen session. Roenicke said there is no timetable yet for Marcum's return. ... Milwaukee announced that RHP Mark Rogers will be recalled from Nashville on Saturday to take Greinke's roster spot.

In Defense of Short Fiction (And Other Bite-Sized Writings) ? noah

by Jacob Brower, Editor-in-Chief

Maybe six months or so ago, my dad bought a Kindle with his credit card points. While my own personal reading tastes tend toward the paper-and-ink variety, I have to admit that my father?s increased reading habits have helped me to see the value of e-readers in keeping our little art alive, or even expanding its reach. My dad, a self-proclaimed hater of reading throughout high school and college, until he met my mother, had still?in my memory?never strayed too far away from his rather light suspense novels and, on the other hand, incredibly dense civil war histories. But the acquisition of his Kindle has brought my father out of the worlds of Robert Ludlum and Shelby Foote and into a wider array of reading choices. With a Kindle he can download, for free no less, selected works by lesser known mystery writers he might like to try, as well as?and more importantly to me, at least?public domain works by famous dead authors. As soon as he figured out how it all worked, he searched around online for a list of the ?100 Best Novels of the 20th Century? and got to work. Still, it came as quite the surprise when my dad told me he?d begun reading James Joyce?s Ulysses, an academic behemoth so intimidating I?ve yet to attempt it. And I say that while also considering Infinite Jest?my very favorite book. Along the way, my dad also came to enjoy authors as wide ranging as Jeffrey Eugenides (whose entire oeuvre was quickly devoured) and Willa Cather, Zadie Smith and Dostoevsky. Lolita and the previously mentioned Infinite Jest are also on his reading list.

Anyway, my point isn?t to declare e-readers the savior of fiction as we know it, though I do think the device has its merits. What occurred to me, and my father, as we sat and discussed his newfound taste, at age fifty-six, in literary fiction, is that all it might take to popularize literary writers (and reading itself, by extension) among a broader audience is accessibility. Encouragement. Because of fiction?s economic model, the books that get heavily advertised are those by writers like James Patterson, with his awkward TV commercials, Jodi Picoult, with her legion of fans, and?perhaps sadly?EL James, with the mainstream success of her erotic fiction. Don?t get me wrong, I?m not trying to start an argument here about the merits of literary vs. commercial writing, or whether one writer is more deserving of success than another?frankly, I don?t care. What seems obvious, though, is that people?being the social creatures we are, often incapable of making our own decisions?read what we are told to read or see other people reading. Maybe, if we?re hipsters, we read what we?ve heard is cool and obscure, to impress people with the breadth of our taste. Aggressive marketing wins readers, and readers win more readers. It seems incredibly simple, and I?m wondering why no one talks about it too much. Maybe my complete lack of knowledge about the intricacies of the publishing business mean I?m wrong, but honestly I think it has more to do with the comfortable, expected culture of writing, reading, and publishing. We?ve all become entrenched in our camps, too happy with the status quo to wonder if there?s a better way to do things. And I don?t mean some huge revolution, just some modest rethinking.

The assumption that lofty literary goals and the desire for quickly consumable entertainment are mutually exclusive is predicated on the economic strategies of publishers, who see only novels (and often only beach fiction) as financially viable for mass publication and aggressive marketing, but also on the attitudes of literary writers and readers, who?I believe?cling to the false dichotomy of literary v. commercial mostly as a way to believe they?we?are smarter and have tastes that set us apart. Taking a step back into reality, it actually looks to me as if the difference is that we?re encouraged to have these tastes, to try these writers and their stories, while the average reader is never given a hint of their existence. And whose fault is that? The writers?, the readers?, or the publishers???If my dad?who, like so many reading Americans, has a bachelor?s degree but no real academic background in literature?could choose with his own free will to read Ulysses, I can?t see any real argument convincing me other average, educated Americans wouldn?t be willing to dip their toes into literary fiction.?And what better entry point than the short story?

Take any introductory course to journalism, mass media, what-have-you, and you?ll be informed about the American public?s short attention span and general inability to pay attention to anything longer than a few hundred words. The dissemination strategies of all major media outlets illustrate this perfectly: newspapers rely on opening sentences that provide the reader with enough information to skip the actual article; television relies on sensationalism and sound-bites; and radio talk shows entertain their necessarily passive audience with inane arguments, fear-mongering, and pseudo-debates. All these forms of media rely on brief reports of some sort or another to keep readers, watchers, and listeners engaged enough to keep buying, subscribing, or tuning in. Why, then, is the novel pretty much the only medium of choice for popular, widely-read fiction?

In one of our increasingly common discussions of fiction, which had turned to short fiction and its apparent lack of popularity, my dad agreed: it seems ludicrous that our short attention spanned American readers are encouraged only to read novels. A short story can do a lot of things thanks to its unique form, and a writer can have unabashedly literary goals without having to worry overmuch about whether or not his or her reader is going to stop reading; it?s only a short story?they?ll power through it.?Nothing against the novel?it should and probably always will be popular?but it?s a mystery to me how people don?t hold the same expectation for the short story: what an accessible world of fiction for the busy reader! What a convenient entry into literary fiction!??There?s great appeal in bite-sized media, fiction included, and what proof?s better than my dad heading out to get the last few Best American?short story collections after our conversation? But still, the short story remains relatively obscure in terms of popular fiction; it?s a writer?s medium, or an academic?s.

In his intro to The Best American Short Stories 2007, guest editor Stephen King relates an excursion to his local ?mega-bookstore,? where he hopes to find some short stories via the massive magazine section: ?I go in,? he writes, ?because it?s just about time for the new issues of Tin House and Zoetrope: All-Story, two Best American mainstays over the years. I don?t expect a new Glimmertrain, though it wouldn?t surprise me to find one.? His search is largely frustrating; he does find copies of The New Yorker and Harper?s without looking too hard, both magazines that maintain a fiction feature, often hidden in the back or in type so tiny that his ?eyeballs? feel like they have been ?sucked halfway out of their sockets.? A few other journals are found, but in locations so remote and inconvenient that they aren?t visible unless King gets on his knees to look. Here, he points out, their beautiful covers won?t attract anyone. At my own local bookstore, I?m hard-pressed to find any literary journals, though one thing both King and I see right upon entering is a table full of best-sellers: Danielle Steele, James Patterson, King himself. As King says about this stuff, his own work included, ?Most of this stuff is disposable, but it?s right up front where it hits you in the eye as soon as you walk in, and why? Because money talks and bullshit walks.? King?s intro, while declaring the American short story unwell, stops short of offering solutions. Talent rises to the top, he says, and points toward the success of writers in the collection like TC Boyle, etc. Though the short story is ill, and its relegation to the bottom shelf discouraging to any top-notch writers who might want to attempt it post-MFA, it?s the fault of a largely uninterested public. True. But why is the public so uninterested?

Because publishers, the gatekeepers of success and sales in the writing and reading industry, make no effort to popularize or promote short fiction. You write short stories in grad school, almost certainly, and maybe a few get published?one makes it into Best American, and suddenly you?ve hit it big. Not financially speaking, but you know. You market your collection to a few agents, some publishers, but with little success. From writers I?ve talked to, this seems to be a pattern?the to-be-expected life of a post-grad school author with a book of short stories. Publishers might even love your work, especially your award winners and anthologized pieces, but they just want to know if you have a novel. Maybe your collection gets published via one of those annual writing contests, where an indie publisher invites a guest editor to pick one lucky writer?s stuff to get published as a book. But let?s be honest?these presses rarely have the means to heavily publicize your work in any way that would reach a broad, non-literary audience. (Disclaimer: I love these presses.)

Meanwhile, James Patterson?s wearing a blazer and a mock turtleneck in a black studio, making a commercial that?s going to make you feel uncomfortable during the news or your baseball game. Women?s magazines?hell, even magazines like The New Yorker?are publishing excerpted novels as short fiction, serving mostly to market the upcoming book. The bestseller lists are full of novels by authors both commercial and literary, but a short story collection peeking in is the rarest of rarities. If this all sounds like a set-up for me to declare the short story is dead, it isn?t. There?re plenty of acclaimed authors who have thus far made careers of primarily being short story writers: ZZ Packer comes to mind, as do Alice Munro and Raymond Carver, and a number of established novelists have also found success and popularity with their short fiction?Junot Diaz, George Saunders, and even Stephen King, just to name a few. I?ve found a great deal of pleasure in the shorter works of Updike and Wallace, myself. As Ben Marcus told me in a masterclass during college, many writers are having success getting their short story collections published. It?s a myth to think the short story will die or cease to exist. This is true, but I stand by my argument that, the way things are now, the short story exists as a medium primarily by and for writers and English majors (or, of course, their teachers), and rarely encountered by anyone else. And this is not only unfortunate, but also foolish.

And yet, I have the tiniest bit of entrepreneurial acumen, and I recognize why the big, important publishers do what they do. It?s all about making money. Publishers aren?t willing to take a risk: they know Patterson?s next Alex Cross novel is going to sell; they don?t have the same confidence in some baseball bildungsroman featuring a gay relationship. But look, it did! Chad Harbach?s The Art of Fielding?made a bunch of year-end ?Best Of? lists and is now a best seller. It?s literary fiction, but?gasp!?it?s also easy to read and uncomplicated: entertaining. Because the publishing industry is a business, not a charity for the arts, I can understand why it?s all about the bottom line. Taking a risk on some literary author who might sell a butt-load of books just isn?t worth it when you?ve got something else that you?re sure will. I harbor no ill-will to popular and commercially successful writers; all I?m saying is, with a little effort in the PR department, there?s plenty of room in popular fiction for the literary. But that?s why I think the short story (and, to some extent, the personal essay, poem, etc.) offers a near-perfect opportunity to hook lifetime casual readers into the world of literary fiction?it?s short, requires less time and extended attention than a novel, and can offer a wide range of ideas, plots, characters, and entertainment potential, especially in collections or journals. The short story is perfect for American readers, they just need to be given a clue where to start. And it?s perfect for those of us who?d like to see literary fiction get a little facetime with the general public. All it would take is a little attention, some encouragement from the powers-that-be: Here bookstore browser, a collection of thrilling short stories, right here on the recommended reading table! Here, girl on the train reading a Jennifer Weiner novel, try one or two of these short stories. They?re wonderful, aren?t they?

I submit to you my central, relatively uneducated, belief:

The public?s hungry for short fiction. They just don?t know it yet.

Uloop Blog ? Keeping a Relationship Alive

Are you in a relationship and feel like you?re far from the honeymoon phase? Just because you have dated your significant other for a long time does not mean that the flame has to die! I mean we have all passed by older couples holding hands that look happier than ever and wondered how they still love each other after all those years.? Long relationships, and relationships in general, should never get boring. There are so many ways to keep it fresh and alive.? Here are some tips that can help you.

Don?t forget that a relationship takes two people.? One person shouldn?t be pulling more weight than the other.? A power imbalance will only lead to arguments and someone being unhappy.? Respect one another and love each other.? My boyfriend has always told me that the best relationships are the ones where you want to give more than you want to receive.? Relationships may not always be peaches and cream but they are worth it.

Make time for each other ? Life gets hectic but isn?t it always nice to know that at the end of the day, you have someone special there for you?? Date nights are a great way to catch up and rekindle the flame.? It will give you both the opportunity to hear about what is going on in each other?s lives, which will help the relationship grow stronger.? Date nights don?t have to be a fancy and expensive dinner at a 5 star restaurant.? It can be a simple stroll in the woods or even lunch at McDonald?s.? Yes, a big mac can be romantic!

You should fight once in a while ? If I have learned one thing in my Communication and Relationship class is that fighting can benefit a relationship.? Having a fight will help the relationship develop if both sides are willing to work through it.? It?s a true test.? Now I?m not insisting that you call one another names and throw random items at each other but talking about each other?s boundaries and other important issues will help you learn more about your partner.? When you resolve an issue, I promise that you?ll feel closer than ever to your boyfriend/girlfriend.

?

Don?t be afraid to speak your feelings ? If you hold in what you are feeling because you don?t want to cause any issues in your relationship, this will only lead you to be unhappy and may even make you begin to feel bitter towards your significant other.? What you don?t factor in when having those feelings is that your boyfriend or girlfriend has no idea that you?re upset if you don?t tell them! They?re not mind readers and if you have an issue, tell them!? Both sides need to be aware of how the other is feeling in order for the relationship to remain stable.

Trust ? This is a huge issue and a reason why many relationships fail.? If you are committed to one another, you need to be able to trust that they are with you and not get mad at them for simple things like talking to a friend of the opposite sex.? Don?t assume that your partner will do things unless it actually happens.? Along with trust is loyalty.? If you have thoughts of being unfaithful, then maybe this relationship is not right for you.? In the right relationship, you will not even think twice about cheating.

Be old fashioned ? This is probably my favorite advice to give out.? Write a letter!? Writing a letter is something anyone rarely does in this digital age but think about how special it is to receive one.? A letter will be a great way to tell your partner how they make you feel.? When I say to ?be old fashioned?, I?m gearing towards romance.? Romance and chivalry is not dead.? Chivalry can come from both sides too.? Write a song or a poem to your partner or cook dinner together.? Even a simple phone call to wish them goodnight before you both go to bed will make you smile and have sweet dreams. Relationships should not be superficial.? Simple things can spice up the romance and remind each other how lucky they feel to be in that particular relationship.

Be accepting ? Both sides in a relationship don?t always have the same interests and that?s okay!? In fact, having the exact same interests may be boring and different interests lead you to learn new things all the time.? While you may not be into whatever your partner is into, support their interests and be interested because they?re sharing this part of themselves with you.? Show them you care.? Who knows, maybe their interests will grow on you.? While different interests are exciting, morals should be where you two should agree on the most.

Be best friends ? From everyone I know who has been in a long relationship, they have always said to me that their boyfriend/girlfriend is their best friend.? Enjoy each other?s company, stay best friends and just have fun!? Remember that love is friendship on fire.

Each side of a relationship may be feeling hurt for reasons that they may not even have to be upset about.? No one was put on this planet to make you happen except yourself.? Love yourself and love your partner as well.? Factor these steps in and you?ll be on our way to a long lasting relationship.? Relationships are fragile, beautiful and special so enjoy the ride.

Aston Villa edges Timbers on penalties

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:28 a.m. ET July 25, 2012

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -Aston Villa defeated the Portland Timbers in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in Tuesday's friendly.

After both teams successfully converted their first four spot kicks, Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan stopped Bright Dike's penalty.

That set up a chance to win for Samir Carruthers, who put his shot into the top left corner.

The game had ended square after the Timbers came alive in the final 15 minutes.

Aston Villa controlled the first half, getting a goal in the 41st minute off a header from Ciaran Clark and having another disallowed when Stephen Ireland was called offside.

Portland's Sebastian Rincon scored off a corner from Franck Songo'o to tie the score at 1-1 in the 76th minute.

Just a few minutes later, Matthew Lowton scored for Aston Villa by heading in a corner.

However, Rodney Wallace drilled a left-footed goal from the top of the box in the 81st minute to tie it up again for Portland and send the game to penalties.

The Timbers have been a dramatically different team at raucous Jeld-Wen Field, where they are 5-2-3 this season, than on the road, where they are 0-2-8.

Aston Villa was completing a three-game preseason tour of America, having defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on July 18 and the Chicago Fire 1-0 on Saturday.

Aston Villa will look to rebound from a disappointing 16th-place Premier League finish last year when it kicks off the season Aug. 18 against West Ham.

Nao humanoid climbs spiral staircase, breakfast in bed is around the corner (video)

Robots can clean your pool and pick up after your lavish dinner parties, but what use is Mr. Nao when you're ringing for a nightcap from the comfort of your second-floor bedroom? Okay, so we've seen the odd bot take a journey up some stairs, but how many cyborgs are prepared to scale flights that twist and turn? Researchers from the University of Freiburg's Humanoid Robots Laboratory have demonstrated a Nao humanoid capable of climbing spiral staircases, which, of course, are more challenging to scale than their non-curving counterparts. A laser range scanner on the top of the robot's head provides a global estimation of the bot's position, and the humanoid uses a 3D model of the staircase to match up with the images it captures on each step. This system lets it get a good enough grip on its geography to successfully detect stair edges and make it to the top with nary a trip. Take a look for yourself in the video below.

Direct Marketing | Social Media Video Marketing | HardHat Media

Direct marketing deal with communication with the consumers without any intervention like press or electronic media. It is thought to be most effective tool for marketing of small business ventures. Main forms of direct marketing that we see today are door to door leaflet marketing, direct mail, telemarketing, email marketing, voicemail marketing, broad cast faxing and marketing via coupons. Or we can say also direct marketing is a form of advertising that reaches its audience without using traditional formal channels of advertising, such as TV, newspapers or radio. Businesses communicate straight to the consumer with advertising techniques such as fliers, catalogue distribution, promotional letters, and street advertising.

Direct Advertising is a sub-discipline and type of marketing. There are two main definitional characteristics which distinguish it from other types of marketing.

The first is that it sends its message directly to consumers, without the use of intervening commercial communication media. The second characteristic is the core principle of successful Advertising driving a specific ?call to action.? This aspect of direct marketing involves an emphasis on trackable, measurable, positive responses from consumers (known simply as ?response? in the industry) regardless of medium.

Direct marketing is attractive to many marketers, because in many cases its positive effect (but not negative results) can be measured directly. For example, if a marketer sends out 1,000 solicitations by mail, and 100 respond to the promotion, the marketer can say with confidence that campaign led directly to 10% direct responses.

There are many channels of Direct Marketinglike:?

Direct mail:The most common form of direct marketing is direct mail, sometimes called junk mail, used by advertisers who send paper mail to all postal customers in an area or to all customers on a list.

Any low-budget medium that can be used to deliver a communication to a customer can be employed in direct marketing. Probably the most commonly used medium for direct marketing is mail, in which marketing communications are sent to customers using the postal service.

?

Telemarketing : Another common form of direct marketing is telemarketing, in which marketers contact consumers by phone.

?

Door-to-Door Leaflet Marketing : Leaflet distribution services are used extensively by the fast food industries, and much other business focusing on a local catchment. Business to consumer business model, similar to direct mail marketing, this method is targeted purely by area, and costs a fraction of the?amount of a mail shot due to not having to purchase stamps, envelopes or having to buy address lists and the names of home occupants.

David Guerrero talks Peruvian cuisine, overcoming brain cancer, and

A few weeks ago, Pat Sharpe ? Texas Monthly?s food editor ? helped judge the Woodlands Grand Rendezvous Tasting?and Chef?s Showcase in which David Guerrero, former executive chef of Samba Grille in Houston, ended up winning for his flavor-packed Peruvian beef hearts dish. Recently, the?Ecuadorian-born chef shared his remarkable story of inspiration and struggle with TEXAS MONTHLY. Here, Guerrero tells us about his journey to cuisine, working for a famous basketball player, fighting brain cancer, and how Houston responds to Peruvian cuisine.?(Unfortunately, Samba Grille closed its doors on July 21).

First of all, congratulations on winning for your dish at the Woodlands Grand Rendezvous Tasting?and Chef?s Showcase. Tell me a bit about what you made.?

I made a very traditional street food dish from South America called Peruvian beef hearts ? anticuchos. Honestly, I believe I won because all the components of the dish were great. The beef hearts were grilled and marinated for twenty-four hours, so they absorbed a lot of great flavor. The huacatay sauce was done well. Using the best and freshest ingredients always helps. We also used some molecular gastronomy with dehydrated choclo and aji panca powder with some cilantro microgreens to prepare the dish.

Of all the things you could have done in life, what is it that made?you want to go into cuisine??

My grandma?s side of the family loved big food parties. There was always a lot of food around when we were growing up. My grandmother would make us try everything, so she had a lot to do with me going into cuisine. Also, as a kid I remember having an artistic side to me. I had this thing for drawing, playing piano, and painting my room the way I wanted it. Being an artist has always been my destiny, and that?s what brought me to the kitchen.

Where do you draw your culinary influences from??

My grandmother. She is an amazing home cook. She is always cooking ? always.

I understand that you were a personal chef to a famous basketball player. How did you end up with that gig? And, I have to ask, did you ever get to shoot some hoops with him?

That?s correct. Well, I believe in something called confession, which means that everything I confess out loud and strongly believe in will come to me sometime in my lifetime. It?s about believing in something, even if you don?t see how it is going to happen. I used to be a chef de cuisine at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land and every morning I drove by this street full of mansions from left to the right. I remember saying out loud to myself, ?I will be a private chef at one of these big mansions one day.? A while after that, a waitress at the country club came to me and said, ?Tracy McGrady is looking for a private chef.? I?m from South America, so I wasn?t really into the basketball scene here and didn?t know who he was. She was surprised that I didn?t have a clue who he was, but she passed me a number to a labor agency. I talked to the agency, sent them my resume, and they called back and said that I had an interview with Mrs. McGrady. When I finally did meet her, Tracy was out of town. I cooked seven courses for her and two other people, and I guess they liked it because she called me the next day and said I got the job. Of course by then I had googled Tracy McGrady. They are a great, lovely family. Tracy always played basketball with his?personal trainer, but I managed to shoot and play with his little kid at the 5,000-square-foot basketball court inside his home.

How and why did you end up at Samba Grille??

I was temporarily working for my chef mentor Philippe Schmidt to help him open his new restaurant?when I got offered the opportunity to work at Samba Grille. They hired me as a sous chef and three months later they decided to bring in a new concept and new ideas, so I was promoted to executive chef.

You?re known for making Peruvian food. Tell me, how do you adapt that kind of cuisine for a Texas audience? Does it lose any of its authenticity??

The good thing about Peruvian cuisine is that it has so many influences from Japanese, Chinese, and African cuisine, so people really don?t have to try hard to like Peruvian cuisine because it is already here ? just in different forms. Peruvian cuisine is already popular around the world; it?s just new to Houston.?Sometimes I feel that the food does lose authenticity because people aren?t used to the different flavors, textures, and smells Peruvian food has, but that?s okay because it turns it into a challenge, and I love that. It?s my job to bring something unexpected to the table.

What are some of the staples of Peruvian food??

Fresh seafood, which is very important in making a good Peruvian ceviche. Wild meats are also a big thing as well.

I understand that you were diagnosed with brain cancer at twenty-seven years old. Tell me how that changed you as a person and as a chef??

As a person, it totally changed me. I?ve learned to become a better human being and not be so selfish. I?ve learned to love the few people that are always going to be there for me no matter what the situation is. As a chef, I lost my sense of taste from the left side of my palate, so that?s a challenge. However, that awoke my other senses like smelling, feeling, and admiring the ingredients. Cancer made me realize that working really hard will still help me achieve my dreams.

I can?t imagine losing your sense of taste as a chef. How do you deal with that obstacle??

I smell. Touch. Imagine. When I was in culinary school and asked my instructor, chef Sherry Lewis, how she put her menu and dishes together, she said, ?Imagine the flavor in your head and sense the flavor in your mouth. Even without having all your taste buds, you will be amazed how many things you can create.? That?s what I do. My sous chef, Alex Bremont, is a good friend and my right-hand man, so he tries things for me and we get by.
