The Low-Down on Polyamorous Relationships | Madame Noire ...

Our usual work banter grew silent. There was the pivotal moment of awkward silence, where every woman either had to choose her bohemian or standardized self. Your take on sex in the workplace was everything; anything you said might slight you forever.

I spoke first, neutrally of course, ?He said?that?he?s what??

The topic of the conversation, Diane, mouthed the words ?Polyamorous.?

Some girls in the room wore their ?WTF? faces, others raised an eyebrow in intrigue and I smiled. I?d heard this once before: It was circa 2005, in the warmth of a fireplace and the aura of good women. Someone was eager to learn why another?s baby?s father had been absent. The girl told us all that he practiced polyamory; the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved (via Wikipedia).

She replied with no hint of agitation, ?He?s been with his other woman.?

Most of us at that time were convinced she?d lost her mind. The room was set ablaze with conversation that day, debates pummeling back and forth between vigorous and strong-minded women.

In present day, the room just fell quiet. The girls nodded their heads in understanding and through listening, I discovered that every one of them had been involved with a polyamorous brother?or sister.

1)????? Alicia said she was cool with it, while it was happening. She beamed at the recollection, ?He told me on the third date that he had another girl. He said sometimes it might even be two, but he never went past three. At first I was mad, but then I realized that we were just having fun, right?? The last word of her sentence seemed to tremble, another notion lingering behind her faux confidence.

2)????? Kai said she was blown away by it. She said she?d never had a woman in all her bisexual life be upfront about ?cheating? the way this man was. ??When I confronted him about the texts, he was calm! He told me that he was polyamorous and proud and that if I couldn?t accept his lifestyle, then we couldn?t be together. He said he was going to tell me when the time was right. Tuh!?

3)????? Diane seemed perplexed by it all. We?d been following her excursions with her new boo since inception. The two met in her neighborhood and went on one date. On the second outing, after a few bouts of wine and tango, they settled into good conversation. It was only then he?d bring up a girlfriend who was in the Peace Corps, who also had a girlfriend, and his diehard polyamory.

She asked us what we thought and I was quite confused myself. I had so many questions. Does polyamory lead to polygamy? Or will he just choose ?the one? when it?s time for marriage or when the time is right? If there is a ?the one? in the polyamorous world, why all the experimentation? What happens if one person doesn?t know about it? Is it cheating then? Isn?t polyamory just an open relationship? The expert Googler that I am (my ONE boyfriend calls me that) scoured the net for some answers, and here?s what I came up with.

a)????? Polyamorous relationships vary on boundaries, set rules, agreements, possessiveness and gender equality. They are all individualistic. Hmmmm.

b)????? Apparently, if only one side of the relationship becomes/is polyamorous and there is a child/property involved, it is usually hidden. Such a lifestyle can hinder custody/divorce cases.

c)?????? I got this via Wikipedia: Children treat parents? partners as a form of stepparent or are told to think of them as aunts and uncles. (Hmmmm. I know plenty of people who?ve experienced this in their childhood homes and it wasn?t polyamory. That was something different entirely.)

d)????? The difference between polyamory and polygamy is that polygamy involves multiple marriages with one man and polyamory is just intimacy/romance shared between multiple people, typically those who are unmarried.

e)????? Polyamory is unlike an open relationship, because most open relationships are based on sexual relations. In polyamory, you can have a full-fledged loving relationship with your significant other?one or all of the others.

I don?t think I need to elaborate, if you?d like to investigate further, by all means. However, my concern right now is the frequency of the mention of polyamory within my circle and many others. Is he really polyamorous or is this just a really exquisite way of cheating? Is this phenomenon the new ?I-didn?t-know-we-were-claiming-one-another?? Because if it?s going to be, I need to know all the rules so I can give my girls the appropriate arsenal to call you out, if you?re BS?ing.

If this is what floats your boat, enjoy yourself. Personally, I don?t agree nor will I ever practice this. I?m all about monogamy: This everlasting bond between another soul and my own is filler enough. That and well?my writing.

Given significant changes recently among manufacturers of EWP, it?s no surprise that lately I?ve been fielding many questions related to engineered wood structural systems for commercial projects. Changes in the industry?manufacturers exiting, others re-branding, and yet others, like RedBuilt?, ?entering? the market?have caused some confusion for designers and contractors alike. Questions like ?What is equivalent to what was specified?? or ?What should I specify now?? come to mind.? The uncertainty can be unnerving.? So, to help mitigate some of the confusion with respect to RedBuilt? and our products, the following information should prove useful ?

A brief history lesson?

Saying RedBuilt? has ?recently entered the market? is a bit of an understatement.? The reality is we are a 50-year-old start-up. Yes, we have a new name, but we, and our name, are rooted in 50-years of innovative EWP history. In 1960, Harold Thomas, also known as ?Red? (our namesake), crossed paths with an architect and self-taught inventor named Art Troutner.? Together they came up with a revolutionary wood and steel composite open-web truss for roof and floor systems.? These trusses offered dramatic improvements and advantages in weight, strength, cost, and ease of installation over dimensional lumber and steel alternatives. Red and Art pioneered the new category of engineered wood products in commercial construction. Their company?called Trus Joist??thrived in the design and manufacturing of engineered roof and floor systems for commercial construction. They continued their innovations with the invention of the wood I-Joist and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), and the business expanded rapidly beyond its roots into other areas including residential construction. In 2000, the company was acquired by the Weyerhaeuser Company. The parent company?s core business model was commodity standardization and high throughput.? They accomplished this by selling structural framing materials to residential contractors through retail lumberyard dealers and distributors. Ideal for residential, but not so ideal for the commercial construction industry. It was also during this period that Weyerhaueser bundled the original Trus Joist? product line under a new brand they called, iLevel?. As time passed, the commercial division experienced little growth. Why? Success in the commercial business required a high degree of consultative, personal service and engineering skills, coupled with customized manufacturing and the flexibility to source directly to jobsites. This created conflict with the parent company?and an opportunity.

Going back to the future?

In 2009, a group of former Trus Joist? executives, along with our co-founder, recognized the 50-year successful legacy and potential of the original Trus Joist? commercial division, and they acquired it from Weyerhaeuser to operate as a stand-alone business.? Mardy Fish Heart Surgery: U.S. Tennis Player Reportedly Underwent Cardiac Catheter Ablation Procedure

-- American tennis player Mardy Fish recently had a medical procedure to correct a heart problem.

Fish hasn't played since late March after being diagnosed with fatigue. He told USA Today he had a procedure called cardiac catheter ablation on Wednesday to deal with misfiring electrical pulses in his heart. He is recovering at his home in Los Angeles.

"It has been so scary," Fish told the newspaper for a story posted in its web site Monday.

Fish, who at No. 10 is the highest-ranked American on the ATP Tour, told USA Today that at times he would wake up with his heart racing as if he'd been running sprints.

"It felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest," he said.

Doctors described his condition as a form arrhythmia. It started afflicting him in February, he said.

Fish said he can resume light training soon and hopes to play at the grass-court tune-up for Wimbledon that begins June 11.

He said withdrawing with the explanation of fatigue bothered him.

"It's kind of a ugly word for me because I've worked so hard the last three years to get that stigma off my name," the 6-foot-2 right-hander told USA Today.

Fish said he kept his condition quiet until he had a better understanding of it.

Sony Patents PS SkEYEnet To Watch Your Every Move, Emotion

It?s time to grab your tinfoil hats and prepare for the coming of an Orwellian nightmare ? a new Sony patent highlights the possibility of a console that will track every aspect of your personality and life.

In a 2010 patent from Sony Computer Entertainment that has only just been published, Sony has detailed the creepy potential of a biometric controller and next gen PS Eye combination. The patent, innocuously titled ?Automated Video Game Rating?, the company first describes how manual rating systems are flawed:

To guide consumers in their purchase, various rating schemes have been devised. Typically, these involve affirmative questioning of the users, and the use of their explicit input. Unfortunately, such an approach inevitably imports the biases of the users, and can lead to inaccurate or irrelevant ratings, because not all users are equally situated, and because haste, and sometimes deliberate dishonesty, factor into the rating session.

Fair enough ? people do generally only rate a game if they really enjoy it or hate it, and there?s no way of knowing if that person has similar tastes to you. Sony?s proposed solution? To film you, watch you and listen to you.

The patent says that:

[A] Camera operates to observe the player during play, triggered to turn on when game play commences for instance. Facial recognition software, provided in camera or console , or even on a remote server such as rating server , serves to register various facial expressions and other behaviors of the player, in real time as the game is played. Expressions that can be registered include grins, grimaces, frowns, face contortions, looks of anger or astonishment, and the like. Each such expression is assigned a value that indicates a positive or negative experience and the degree of that experience at a particular point in game play. The values can be sent to ratings server through the network or stored on the console for sending at a later time when the conditions of network are more appropriate or the game deems more appropriate.

Other observational player data can also be collected. For instance, a sound recorder, integral with camera and/or console, can be used for voice recognition, to determine when expletives are used or when sounds or tones of contentment, triumph, anger or excitement are uttered. These incidents, measured in real time commensurately with game play, are also assigned various values indicative of their positive or negative nature and their degree. A user may shout ?Hooray!? triumphantly upon defeating a foe in the game, for instance, and this can be detected and assigned a high positive value. Alternatively, the user can shout an expletive, which, if under expected circumstances, such as upon losing a life, may be assigned one negative value, while if under unexpected circumstances, as in uneventful game play, may be assigned a higher negative value as it may indicate boredom or lack of challenge or excitement. Other observational player data can include body position and posture and changes therein, along with various physical actions, such jumping up suddenly, flinging motions, and so forth.

So, at this stage, the patent allows the camera to watch your emotions, as well as listen to you. The level of accuracy of the watching camera could be potentially incredible:

• Temperature of the player?s hands or face or other body parts (via an infrared camera for instance) as signs of stress, frustration or anger
• Player?s gaze time for how bored they are to what is displayed on screen

Could the next PS Eye ? which has been repeatedly patented ? be even more precise than the recently revealed Leap camera (which is apparently 100x as precise as the Kinect)?

But the camera wouldn?t be the only thing used to work out exactly what you?re thinking. The patent mentions biometric controllers that measure your heartbeat and even sweat levels. This ties in to previous patents and rumors that the PS4 would have biometric controllers.

Using both these input methods, the console would also work out more personal aspects of your being, such as:

• Hair style recognized (large, long, afro, bald)
• Hair color
• Facial hair recognized
• Wears glasses
• Color of clothing
• Has an eye patch
• Wears earrings
• Wears facial jewelry (nose rings, etc)

This aspect of the patent is all the more baffling: while heartrates and sweat levels could potentially show your enjoyment levels of a game, what would your hair color have to do with it? Does Sony think people with blond hair like certain types of games, or that those with nose rings won?t like first person shooters?

In fact, the patent says something that isn?t exactly very politically correct:

Geographic information can even be used to point to cultural differences in players.

To get this information, the system could end up ?analyzing IP addresses or by using GPS coordinates.?

You won?t be able to escape it when you travel either, with the patent saying that ?the system can take the form of a portable gaming device?. If you have a 3G gaming device, it will then track where you play, and somehow work out your surroundings:

The type of games that are played while riding busses, trains or cars, or waiting in lines at a bank or at a bus stop can be tracked, based on geographic data, which can vary while the game is played. Also, indoor vs. outdoor game playing can be tracked, either geographically or using appropriate sensors, such as natural/sunlight detectors, provided for example on a portable gaming device. The geographical inference can even be resolve to the particular type of indoor room in a house or mall, or whether the player is seated at a desk, standing up in front of a TV, or reclining on a couch. Such information can elucidate player behavior and help match players to each other.

Don?t expect to be able to hide much from the system either if you have a Twitter or Facebook account, as it can access ?databases such as those of social networks? to get your age and gender.

Of course, all of this is simply a patent and might never see the light of day, but even the fact that Sony could be contemptating such an invasive move sends chills down my spine.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) ? Hurricane Bud weakened Friday as it headed toward a string of laid-back beach resorts and small mountain villages on Mexico's Pacific coast south of Puerto Vallarta. Two people, one of them from France, were reported missing in a separate storm in Cuba.

Mexican Authorities canceled school in 11 communities expected to be hit by heavy rains in Jalisco state, and emergency workers prepared emergency shelters, many of them in empty school classrooms.

Heavy rains and 6-foot (2-meter) high waves pelted Melaque, a beach town on the Bahia de Navidad, about 60 mph (100 kilometers) east of the sparsely populated stretch of coast where the hurricane's center was expected to come ashore during the night.

Rafael Galvez, manager of the Hotel Bahia in Melaque, said his staff would to board up windows before Bud's arrival.

"For me, really, this is my fourth hurricane. I went through Wilma in Cancun," which hit as a Category 4, Galvez said. "This is a little less severe."

Category 2 Hurricane Jova hit the area in October, killing six people and flooding parts of Melaque and neighboring Barra de Navidad.

"There was a lot of flooding in the whole area, and we lost electricity," Galvez recalled. But this week, he said, only seven of his hotel's 26 rooms were occupied, and none of the hotel's guests were planning to leave.

A separate storm was pounding much of Cuba and the Bahamas on Friday. Cuba's civil defense agency reported that a French citizen, Alain Manaud, and Silvestre Fortun Alvarez of Cuba were missing after trying to cross rain-swollen rivers, according to the government's Prensa Latina news agency. It said a search for them was continuing.

An official at the French Embassy in Havana said Manaud was 66 and had lived in Cuba for several years. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly.

The agency quoted government meteorologists as saying more than 20 inches (500 millimeters) of rain had fallen on parts of the central province of Sancti Spiritus.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that the system had about a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone.

A hurricane warning was up for Mexico's Pacific coast from Manzanillo, east of Melaque, northwestward to Cabo Corrientes. A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning were in effect from Punta San Telmo westward to east of Manzanillo.

Bud had been a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 kph) late Thursday, but it was down to Category 1 force with winds of 75 mph (120 kph) by late Friday afternoon. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Bud was expected to weaken further before hitting the coast during the night.

The storm was centered about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Manzanillo and moving north near 7 mph (11 kph).

The Hurricane Center said the storm would likely decline to tropical storm-force as it hit land, move a little inland and then make a U-turn and head back out into the Pacific. Rain, rather than wind, could be the big threat, with the Hurricane Center warning of the "potential for life-threatening mudslides" in steep terrain inland.

The government of Jalisco state prepared hundreds of cots and dozens of heavy vehicles such as bulldozers that could be needed to move debris.

Officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were in close contact with managers of the hundreds of hotels in the city in case tourists need to move to eight emergency shelters. It said the sea along the city's famous beachfront was calm, but swimming had been temporarily banned as a precaution.

Jalisco state's civil defense office said two shelters had been opened in Cihuatlan, a town just inland from Melaque that was hard hit by flooding from Jova.

The office also said authorities had decided to open a trench to help drain a coastal lagoon near Melaque that was already full and could overflow.

The region is experienced at handling hurricanes, Galvez noted. "The government planning has helped a lot," he noted.

Alleged Lego scammer sold 2,100 boxes through website, cops say

The California software exec arrested for allegedly switching bar codes on high priced Lego sets resold them online through "TomsBrickyard," a site so popular with Lego buyers that they rated his service "excellent."

Thomas Langenbach, who was the vice president of SAP Labs Integration and Certification Center in Palo Alto, was arrested May 8 outside a Mountain View Target store.

In a plot more complex than a Lego Death Star set, police say Langenbach used a home computer and printer -- and lots of Legos ? to amass a small fortune reselling the toys.

"Believe it or not this will be our first tech exec in a Lego case," Police Chief Scott Vermeer told ABC News.

Lagenbach, who lives in a gated multi-million dollar home in San Carlos, Calif., is free on $10,000 bail but has refused to comment.

Police said that Lagenbach, 47, was repeatedly captured on store surveillance video with expensive Lego sets in his cart at retail stores. Detectives said he did something called a "ticket switch," changing the price by allegedly putting his own barcode stickers on boxes so he could pay less. For example he would replace the barcode tag for a $249 Millennium Falcon Lego set with a tag for just $49, police said.

He then resold the sets through the TomsBrickyard web site, according to police. Prosecutors said he sold 2,100 Lego items for roughly $30,000 over the last year. Police are investigating to determine how many of those sets were obtained through fraudulent bar codes.

On the day of his arrest Langenbach had allegedly placed three phony bar codes on items, bought one of the boxes, and placed the other two back on the store's shelf. He had 32 fake bar codes in his car as well, according to Cindy Hendrickson, a supervising deputy district attorney in Santa Clara County.

Police photos from a search of his home show dozens of homemade barcodes neatly organized, plus stacks and stacks of brand new Lego sets.

"It certainly looks like an ongoing enterprise ? to think we caught him the only five times he did this is very hard to believe," Hendrickson said.

Langenbach has so far refused to comment, now that he is free on $10,000 bail and has been is facing felony burglary charges -- not exactly child's play, despite a whole lot of Lego.

It's not the first time Legos have been targeted by scammers. In 2005, a Reno man was arrested for changing prices with phony barcodes for nearly $200,000 worth of Lego sets.
